Brakes and oil changes

What we do, and what it costs

Brakes are our speciality, and oil changes round out the menu. Below is every job we take, what is actually involved in it, and the range most vehicles land in — so you can decide whether to call before anyone quotes you anything.

Typical pricing

Fitted prices — parts, labour and a road test included. Find your vehicle type, read across, and that is where your job starts. Nothing here changes because of how busy we are that week.

Job Most cars Trucks, SUVs & vans Heavy-duty & European
Brake inspection Free Free Free

Oil changes

Oil change prices including the oil, a new filter and labour. Vehicles taking more than 5 quarts (cars) or 7 quarts (trucks, SUVs and vans) are quoted by the quart.
Job Most cars Trucks, SUVs & vans
Synthetic blend oil change from $49 from $59
Full synthetic oil change from $55 from $65

Most cars

Sedans, hatchbacks and small crossovers — Civic, Corolla, Elantra, Malibu, Escape, CR-V, RAV4 and the like.

Trucks, SUVs & vans

Half-ton pickups and full-size SUVs — F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Tahoe, Explorer, Transit.

Heavy-duty & European

Three-quarter-ton and up, plus anything with an electronic parking brake that needs a scan tool — BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW.

Why "from"? A set of front pads for a Civic and a set for an F-250 are not the same part, and two cars in the same column can still be $40 apart on parts alone. The tier tells you the floor; the quote tells you the number. What we will not do is advertise one headline price nobody actually pays and then find reasons to climb.

What could move it up: seized calipers, snapped bleeder screws, rusted-on rotors, or hardware that has to be replaced rather than cleaned. We check for all of that during the inspection and tell you before we start — never once the wheel is already off.

Mobile service

What travel costs

We are based in Bloomsburg. If we drive to you, there is a travel fee based on how far that is — and you will see it on the quote before you agree to anything, never added afterwards.

Travel fees by zone, measured in drive time from our Bloomsburg shop.
Zone Towns Drive time Travel fee
Zone 1 Bloomsburg, Espy, Lightstreet, Buckhorn, Almedia, Rupert, Catawissa, Orangeville Up to ~10 min No travel fee
Zone 2 Berwick, Danville, Millville, Mifflinville, Riverside, Briar Creek, Stillwater ~10–20 min $25
Zone 3 Elysburg, Nescopeck, Benton, Numidia, Shickshinny, Sunbury ~20–30 min $45
Zone 4 Lewisburg, Milton, Shamokin, Hazleton and beyond 30 min + from $75

Per visit, not per vehicle

Two cars at one address, or a few trucks at one yard, share a single travel fee. Line them up for the same morning and it is the cheapest way to have mobile work done.

Coming to us is always free

No travel fee on work done at Bloomsburg, ever. If you are out in Zone 3 or 4 with one vehicle, driving to us is usually cheaper — and we will say so on the phone rather than let you book the dearer option by accident.

$95 minimum call-out

Mobile visits start at $95 including the work. It is not worth loading the van for less, and we would rather tell you that up front than take the booking and sound disappointed when we arrive.

Fleets and multi-vehicle

Three or more vehicles booked into one visit: 10% off the labour on every unit, and the travel fee is charged once for the whole visit. Tell us how many and what they are and we will quote the lot in one go.

01 — Brake pads

Pads that bite from the first stop

A pad swap is the most common brake job there is, and it is also the one most often done badly. Slapping new pads onto dirty, dry slide pins is why a set that should last 40,000 miles wears unevenly and starts squealing again in eight months.

We fit ceramic or semi-metallic to suit how you actually drive — ceramic for quiet daily commuting, semi-metallic if you tow, haul, or spend your week coming down grades with a load on. New hardware and shims go on every time, and the pads get bedded in properly on a road test before you get the keys back.

Brake pad replacement in detail

Included every time

  • New abutment clips and shims — never the old ones
  • Slide pins cleaned, inspected and re-greased
  • Caliper piston retracted properly, not forced
  • Lugs torqued to the manufacturer's spec
  • Bed-in road test before handover

02 — Rotors

Measured first, replaced second

Plenty of shops sell rotors with every pad job because it is easier than measuring. We put a micrometer on yours and compare the number to the minimum thickness cast into the rotor itself. If there is life left, we tell you and you keep your money.

When they do need replacing, the hub face gets wire-wheeled back to clean metal first. Skip that and the tiny ridge of rust left behind holds the new rotor at an angle — which is how a car comes back three months later with a pulsing pedal and everyone blames the parts.

Rotor replacement in detail

Choosing a rotor

  • Blank — the right answer for most daily drivers. Quiet, cheapest, longest pad life.
  • Slotted — sheds water and gas; worth it if you tow or drive hard.
  • Drilled — looks the part and cools fast, but can crack under heavy loads.

We will tell you honestly which one your vehicle needs, and it is usually the cheapest of the three.

03 — Calipers

The part that quietly ruins everything else

A caliper that is not fully releasing drags the pad against the rotor all day. You get one wheel far dirtier than the others, a hot smell after a drive, fuel economy quietly dropping, and a brand-new pad worn to nothing in a couple of months.

We find it during the inspection, and we fix it before any new parts go on — otherwise you are paying twice for the same job. Vehicles with electronic parking brakes need the motors retracted with a scan tool first; we have that covered.

Caliper replacement in detail

Signs a caliper is sticking

  • One wheel noticeably dirtier than the rest
  • A hot, sharp smell after a short drive
  • The vehicle pulling under braking
  • Pads worn out on one side only
  • The vehicle feeling like it is holding back

04 — Brake fluid

The service everyone forgets

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls water out of the air through the hoses and the reservoir cap over the years. Water boils far lower than fluid does, so on a long descent with the brakes working hard, it turns to vapour. Vapour compresses. That is the pedal that suddenly goes soft halfway down a hill.

Most manufacturers want it changed every two to three years. Almost nobody does it. We test the moisture content, tell you the number, and flush the whole system rather than topping up the reservoir and calling it done.

05 — Brake lines & hoses

Pennsylvania puts a lot of salt on the roads, and along the North Branch the damp keeps it working. Steel brake lines rust from the outside in, and by the time one weeps the rest of that line is usually just as thin. Rubber flex hoses fail differently — they swell shut internally, trapping pressure at one wheel so it drags or refuses to release.

  • Corroded hard lines re-run, bent and flared to fit
  • Flex hoses replaced in pairs across an axle
  • Full bleed and pedal test afterwards

06 — Free inspection

Twenty minutes, no charge, no sales pitch

This is how we would rather earn your business — by showing you the numbers and letting them speak. If your brakes are fine, you leave knowing they are fine.

  1. Wheels off

All four, so nothing is judged by squinting through a wheel spoke.

  2. Measured

Pad thickness and rotor thickness with a micrometer, compared to the vehicle's minimum spec and to what Pennsylvania's safety inspection requires.

  3. Hydraulics checked

Fluid moisture tested, hoses and hard lines inspected, calipers checked for drag and leaks.

  4. Written results

You get the actual measurements in writing, plus how long we think you have. No pressure, no same-day-only discount.

Free at the shop. We will happily inspect on a mobile visit too, but the travel fee for your zone still applies to the trip.

07 — Mobile service

We bring the shop to your driveway

No ride to arrange, no afternoon in a waiting room, no second trip to pick the vehicle back up. We turn up with the jack, the stands, the torque wrench and the parts, and do the job where the vehicle already is.

The work costs the same as it would at the shop. The only difference is the travel fee for your zone, which is free inside Bloomsburg and the towns right around it — see what travel costs above.

What we need from you

  • A flat, solid surface — concrete, asphalt or packed gravel
  • Room to open the doors and get the wheels off
  • The vehicle cool, and the keys

Not suitable for mobile

08 — Oil changes

Oil changes, done straight

The oil your manufacturer specifies, a new filter, the drain plug torqued properly and the oil-life reminder reset — with no upsell script. While it drains, we look over your brakes and tell you what we see.

At the shop in Bloomsburg, or at your door anywhere we cover: mobile visits start at the $95 minimum call-out, plus your zone’s travel fee.

Oil change details

Included every time

  • The oil your manual specifies
  • A new oil filter
  • Oil-life reminder reset
  • A look over your brakes while it drains
  • Old oil and filter taken for recycling
